17th July 2011 Bury Girls Under 8’s FC v Mill Hill

Team: Jessica (Keeper), Daisy, Hannah, Lucy, Olivia, Jessica, Eve, Maya and Izzy.

On a very wet Sunday the Bury Girls Under 8’s hosted Mill Hill Girls from Blackburn in their first friendly of the new season.  Spirits were high from both teams despite the weather and the game didn’t disappoint.

Mill Hill took an early lead breaking through the Bury defence to go one on one with the goal keeper and slotted home to take the lead.  Mill Hill kept up the pressure scoring a second goal soon after the centre kick.  This woke the Bury Girls up and they started to take shape and defend with purpose.  Jessica and Eve put in some great saving tackles at the back to keep the attacking Mill Hill at bay.

The pressure on the defence broke again with Mill Hill taking a 3 goal lead.  The man marking from Mill Hill was proving difficult for the Bury Girls giving them no space to work.  Maya came in to help out the defence to replace the injured Lucy.  Bury Girls spirits were still high and pressed forward testing the keeper with two great shots from Hannah and Olivia.  However Mill Hill pressed again to score with a deflected shot.

Bury got their breakthrough when a deflected shot was handled in the area.  Bury were awarded a penalty which Hannah stood up and took to get the first goal on the board.  The goal gave the Bury Girls a boost and we quickly got another goal back.  Mill Hill came back with two further goals to go into half time with a 6-2 lead.

A quick team talk and change around moving Daisy and Olivia upfront with Hannah and Lucy dropping into midfield, Jessica and Izzy making up the defence we brought in our second keeper Jessica for the second half.  Mill Hill were quick out of the gates again scoring two early goals, one being an own goal.  This is when Jessica made the area hers and pulled off some superb saves in the second half to keep the score down.  Bury then went on the attack scoring 3 unanswered goals.  We brought in Eve again to help out in defence who did a great job protecting Jessica at the back.  Defender Jessica picked up the ball and ran from defence with one thing on her mind and scored with a long range shot to start the comeback.

More solid teamwork paid off when Hannah was played through to score her second.  Olivia then got onto the score sheet after some great work to make it 8-5.  Lucy was starting to boss the midfield with some heavy challenges and Bury looked like a new team.  However more resilience from Mill Hill gave them two further goals.  Bury pressed again with Olivia driving the ball down the wing finishing with a superb cross that was deflected into the goal to finish the game 10-6 to Mill Hill.  Handshakes all round at the end of a great game.  Well done to Mill Hill for the win and to Bury Girl for never giving up.

Bury Girls & Ladies FC successfully introduced an Under 8s section at the club during the Summer of 2008.  The development programme for this age group is designed to allow the girls to learn new skills and how to play football, whilst having fun.  Girls in school years 1, 2 & 3 are more than welcome to come and join in the fun.

Whilst learning the girls are also introduced to semi-competitive football and play in friendly matches and fair play tournaments during the course of the football season.

Girls from this age group since 2008 have gone on to represent the Club at Under 11s, 10s and Under 9s age groups during the 2011/12 season.
