Golborne Tournament

GOLBORNE TOURNAMENT REPORT-UNDER ‘9s’-31st MAY 2009

Having gained some initial experience in a couple of friendly matches on grass, the next

challenge for the girls of our newly formed Under 9s squad was to take part in a tournament on grass pitches used by Golborne Girls FC.

We were once again playing teams that are actually this season’s Under 9s, rather than next season’s (as we will be), so most of the girls taking part for other teams were actually in the next school year above our girls.

In addition, the majority (possibly all) of the teams taking part have been playing in a local Wigan ‘development’ league this season and have all enjoyed some good success in the matches they have played against each other. They certainly provided an excellent test and match experience for all the enthusiastic girls from Bury Girls & Ladies FC that came along on the day.

We were able to take up to 10 girls in our squad, but due to various other commitments, the actual number available was 8 girls, which proved ideal on the day, although left us a little vulnerable to any injuries, particularly with the number of matches being played.

The girls attending the tournament from Bury Girls & Ladies FC were as follows: -

Courtney   Sophie    Eloise   Molly N   Kayleigh    Kiera    Jodie    Jade

We did some ‘roll on-roll off’ substitutions to ensure that all the girls kept involved and to give everyone an equal amount of ‘pitch time’.  A number of the girls took turns to be goalkeeper and this was great to see—willing volunteers all!!

Results of the group stage games were as follows: -

Sporting Trophy Playoffs

Sporting Trophy Final

Congratulations to Astley & Tyldesley Girls who won the main trophy on the day!!!

All had a great time and appeared to enjoy the experience of playing in a tournament and eating plenty of ice creams along the way!!! The girls did really well, considering the age difference compared to most of their opponents and the fact that we are only just beginning to learn how to play within a team.

Thanks to all the parents for bringing the girls along and for being patient as the various stages of the competition took place!

Thanks also of course to all the organisers at Golborne for a thoroughly enjoyable day and to all the other teams and managers for playing the games in a very sporting and friendly fashion. We look forward to getting the chance to play in the tournament once again next year.
