West Lancs Girls League Tournament at Burscough
Tournament Report
Bury Girls & Ladies FC “U10s” at West Lancashire Girls’ League Funday
Held at Burscough FC-28th March 2010
Along with a team from our Under 8s squad, the Under 9s girls once again entered a ‘Funday’ tournament hosted by our friends from the West Lancashire Girls’ League. The event was originally planned to take place indoors at the DW Soccerdome in Wigan, but due to a double booking, actually took place outdoors at the Unibond League Ground of Burscough FC, near Ormskirk, in West Lancashire.
We were fortunate to have a nice sunny afternoon for the event, but there was a cold wind blowing in from the Irish Sea!
With the wind in our faces, our team this time for the 5-a-side event was made up as follows:-
Jodie, Jessica, Amy, Kiera, Sophie, Kayleigh and Sasha.
The event was split into two groups (roughly split into known experience of the teams involved), so 8 teams were taking part overall.
Results of our matches were as follows:-
Wigan 0 – Bury 0
Euxton 1 - Bury 1
Birkdale 2 – Bury 0
Extra Group game played Euxton 2 – Bury 0
These were all good close games, played on tight pitches laid out on the main Burscough FC pitch.
We swapped around our team each game to give everyone a good share of the action and there were some excellent saves from Sasha in our nets.
Our sole goal of the afternoon came from Kayleigh, playing in an unusual attacking role, but getting due reward for her determination to get through the stalwart Euxton defence.
We had plenty of other chances throughout the games, but unfortunately could not quite get those elusive breaks.
The final game on each pitch was a 10-a-side fun game involving two different teams making up one side. Confused??—Yes we were—but enjoyed our pairing with the friendly girls from Academy Girls FC in Bolton, as we took on the combined Wigan/Euxton team. A friendly draw was the overall result in that one—I think!!
As always, the organisers made sure that all girls competing did not go away empty-handed, so they presented medals and West Lancs Girls’ badges to all the players in the closing ceremony.
A very enjoyable afternoon overall.
And very well done to the girls from our Under 8s squad who were taking part in the next age group up—and to their new managers Steve and John for getting them off to a winning start!!!
Our thanks go to all the organisers and referees from the West Lancs Girls’ League, to Burscough FC for hosting the event and to all our parents for making the trip over to Burscough, plus their ongoing support and encouragement of the girls.
Special thanks also to my ever-dependable assistant Mark Edwards, who puts in so much time and effort to helping our girls develop their footballing skills—he just wants to see them all realise the potential that we know is in there!!!
We look forward to taking part in more of these events across the next few months.
