Euxton Football Tournament
Saturday 28th June 2008
Bury were last year's winners at U10s could they retain their title at U11s (season 07/08).
We arrived at Euxton as the reigning champions, however with a depleted side (due to several regulars missing) we had some concerns with how we could defend our title.
We had been drawn in Group B with our first game against a strong Burscough side. So with a new look line up we took the field with some nerves, but the usual Bury fighting spirit.
Straight from the kick off the girls went on the attack and with some great passing put Burscough on the backfoot. With Jenny and Emily defending solidly, our terrific goalkeeper Katherine had a quiet game ,for a change! As the match went on the team was gaining in confidence and with a great move started by Mia, sending our own goal machine Bianca through to crack the ball home, 1-0 to Bury. We finished the game under no pressure - A great start.
The next match was against Euxton South. We had played them a couple of weeks ago and drew 1-1, so we knew what to expect. With growing confidence we set about Euxton with attack after attack . They created very little with the duo in defence, Jenny end Emily rock solid, another quiet game for Katherine in goal, am I dreaming? We will need her later.
With Mia commanding the midfield, Simone and Lucy running the defenders ragged, chance after chance went begging, not another one of those days. Just when we thought we would never score up popped Bianca to steer home from just inside the box 1 - 0 and much deserved. Two wins and we sat at the top of the group.
Next we faced Westbury Gems it was a tight game but although we didn't score we didn't look likely to lose. With 7 points, we were surely through to the semi-final. NO! If we lost the last group game and results went against us we could be out .
Our opponent in the Semi final was Wigan, a team we had played 3 times this year, losing all 3 in very close games. Wigan started very well with some good passing moves, but as we got into the game we created our own chances but couldn't get the finish. The game was real end to end with Kath making some fine saves. As we attacked through flying Simone, and the skill of Mia we created a run of corners, but we came very close, Bianca just missing out. Another corner drilled in by Jenny managed to come right through the crowd to find Lucy Whittaker who smashed the ball into the net, told you it would come Lucy!!!!
Bury beat Wigan 1 - 0 to secure a place in the final.
We were in the final! and up against another Scouse team Dynamo Rangers who were not the Fair Play Winners 2008 that's for sure.
On the way to the final we had not conceded a goal and we didn't look like we would here, even though they had some chances Kath, Emily and Jenny were not letting anything passed.
Again the best chances came from our corners but we were just missing out. The game finished 0-0 which saw Bury into extra time. The same story, Bury with most attacks but couldn't finish.
PENALTIES! could the girls hold their nerve? Team talk, don't worry we have Kath, and their keeper won't dive so hard and low.
First penalty to Dynamo scored, unlucky Kath. Lucy Whittaker fires home like a pro. Kath saves their second, Bianca bottom corner 1-2. Kath saves again 1-2, Mia unlucky still 1-2. Dynamo's fourth hits the post, if Emily scores we have won. The crowd were going mad even Diana (Under 13's) trying to do a John Motsen over the phone to Graham who was going crazy at someone's wedding!!!
Emily steps up and smashes the ball in, everybody goes mad. A great team performance by
Katherine, Jenny, Emily, Simone, Mia, Lucy, Bianca and Holly, fantastic. The girls that were missing you will have to work to get back into this team.
Thanks to the parents for the support, especially Katherine's Grandad, told you we would win!!
